About This stage

During this stage we encourage children and young people to reflect on their own behaviour, and understand how our behaviour is shaped by who we are as individuals as well as the influences on our lives. This will lay the foundation for the stages that will follow throughout the year: celebrating difference, building empathy and developing positive relationships.

Background

Lots of things influence how we behave – our values, experiences, emotions and how connected we feel to others, to name a few.  Every day we make decisions about how we act towards others – both consciously and unconsciously.

Choosing to act respectfully isn’t always easy, and doesn’t come naturally in every situation, but how we behave is ultimately our decision. While we may all be individuals, we are all connected. Our behavior can affect others, both positively and negatively.

All behaviour communicates needs, and bullying behaviour is no different. We need to help young people to reflect on their own actions, identify their feelings and needs and where appropriate develop alternative ways of responding to these.

How to use these education and learning resources
to improve practice

These resources are designed to help you spark conversation and inspire action among children and young people in your setting.

For maximum impact they should be used as far as possible within a whole-setting approach to anti-bullying. For more information on the many ways to prevent and respond to bullying, visit www.respectme.org.uk

MAKING THE LINK TO Curriculum for ExcellencE

The campaign resources support delivery of many of the Health and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes within Curriculum for Excellence. More detail contained in each resource.

They will also support the self-evaluation process outlined in the How Good Is Our School framework, particularly around Quality Indicator 3.1: Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion.

  1. I know that friendship, caring, sharing, fairness, equality and love are important in building positive relationships. As I develop and value relationships, I care and show respect for myself and others. HWB 0-05a / HWB 1-05a / HWB 2-05a / HWB 3-05a / HWB 4-05a

  2. I recognise that each individual has a unique blend of abilities and needs. I contribute to making my school community one which values individuals equally and is a welcoming place for all. HWB 0-10a / HWB 1-10a / HWB 2-10a / HWB 3-10a / HWB 4-10a

  3. Through contributing my views, time and talents, I play a part in bringing about positive change in my school and wider community. HWB 0-13a / HWB 1-13a / HWB 2-13a / HWB 3-13a / HWB 4-13a

  4. I reflect on how my attitudes, beliefs, values and morality can influence my decisions about friendships, relationships and sexual behaviour. HWB 3-46a / HWB 4-46a

  5. I recognise that we have similarities and differences but are all unique. HWB 0-47a / HWB 1-47a

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

Here are some questions that might help you think about the practice in your setting, and how the #ChooseRespect campaign can help you contribute to improvement.

  • To what extent do we support children and young people to reflect on their values and experiences, developing a sense of self and identity?

  • To what extent do we help children and young people to understand what shapes their behaviour, and the impact it may have on others?

  • To what extent does the culture and ethos in our setting focus on the prevention of bullying through promoting positive relationships?

Going further

The next stage of the #ChooseRespect campaign will launch in January, if you can’t wait until then here are some suggestions to keep up momentum:

  1. Does your school or setting have an anti-bullying policy? If not, use our Policy Through to Practice toolkit to start the process of developing one.

  2. Does your community of parents and carers know that the #ChooseRespect campaign is happening? Get in touch and let them know using social media, newsletters, or parents’ events. If you’re looking for information to share with them download our ‘Bullying, A Guide for Parents and Carers’.

  3. Reflect on the culture in your setting. You could lead a discussion at your next team meeting using the following questions:

  • Does our organisation value and respect diversity?

  • Is it open to new learning?

  • Does it treat people with dignity and respect?

  • What practices are in place?

  • Is decision making driven from the top down?

  • Why are role models important in our culture?

  • What can YOU do?

  • Share your #ChooseRespect story so far with us to feature in our Your Stories section. Enquire@respectme.org.uk

  • Have you nominated someone to join you on the #ChooseRespect journey?
